2011 Jeep Grand Cherokee 75th Anniversary Edition
Jeep Grand Cherokee (2011) At A Glance
Grand Cherokee Overland rides well with strong performance from 3.0 CRD. Excellent off road. Much improved all round from 2013 facelift.
Hard and uncomfortable ride on 20-inch wheels. 18-inch wheels improve ride, but hinders handling on the road. Steering lacks any feel.
Fiat has had a majority share in Chrysler and Jeep since 2009 and the two American brands are starting to feel the benefit. This Grand Cherokee was launched in 2011 and has a good foundation, sharing the same chassis and engines as the Mercedes-Benz ML. Add in good equipment levels, keen pricing plus decent performance and the Grand Cherokee has plenty of appeal.
But the game has moved on considerably in the world of SUVs and there's more competition than ever. Jeep's once strong image is not what it was and with the likes of the Hyundai Santa Fe around, Jeep has had to step up its game. Thankfully, the Grand Cherokee was extensively revamped in mid-2013 and saw massive improvements in all departments. You can spot the newer models by the slimmer headlights, but the changes are far more reaching than a mere facelift.
In fact, such are the considerable changes, you could almost see this as an all-new model. It's still big and offers comfortable seating for five with genuine Jeep off-road ability, but now the quality of the interior has been hugely improved and it's far superior on-road than before with better stability in corners and more responsive steering. It's better inside too with big improvements in quality and the finish. Touches like the Audi-style gear lever help lift things.
Under the bonnet remains the strong 3.0 CRD diesel engine that may not the be the last word in refinement but offers great reserves of low down pulling power and delivers smooth performance through the standard eight-speed automatic gearbox.
As Jeep aims to recover its somewhat diminished brand image, the Grand Cherokee will play a key part. There's plenty to like about the big SUV and the revisions from 2013 make what was a poor offering vastly better. Standard equipment levels are good and as an alternative to the Volvo XC90 and the Toyota Land Cruiser, there's much to recommend about the big Jeep.

Ask Honest John
A dealer is refusing to fix my faulty car - do I have to take him to court?
The law says otherwise. The dealer is liable for any fault that could have been present or developing on date of sale for 6 months from the date of sale: http://www.honestjohn.co.uk/faq/consumer-rights/ If he won't accept your rejection of the vehicle take the matter to the County Court, and if you get a judgement in your favour, pay the £70 extra for a High Court Sheriffs enforcement order.
Misrepresented service history
That is grounds to either reject the car outright because it was misrepresented, to insist that the dealer provides an all-inclusive insured warranty for the final year with any problem not covered by the warranty covered by by him, or to pay you £3000 for the diminution in value as a result of the failure to service the car properly. Law here: http://www.honestjohn.co.uk/faq/consumer-rights/ If the dealer takes the 2nd option, get everything in writing.
Why are rear windows for the Jeep Grand Cherokee not held in stock anywhere?
Chrysler Jeep has just extensively facelifted the 2011 Jeep Grand Cherokee: But I did not realise that this had led to a shortage of parts for the 2011 model. A quick email to Chrysler Jeep found a rear window with a slightly different tint in the UK and arranged for a correct window to be airfreighted from the USA the next week.
Which SUV to replace our 2009 Volkswagen Tiguan?
The next size up from an Audi Q3 is a Q5, but by far the best in the category is the BMW F25 X3 2.0d 4WD. Next best so far is probably the Mazda CX-5 Skyactiv. Honda has just launched a new CR-V and Ford is about to launch a new Kuga, tested here: honestjohn.co.uk/road-tests/ford/ford-kuga-20-tdci-2013-road-test/ while the F25 X3, CX-5 and CR-V are all tested at honestjohn.co.uk/road-tests/. The new RAV4 will be tested in February. If you need to tow, the Hyundai Santa Fe and KIA Sorento manuals can both haul 2500kg. Remember, for ride comfort, tyre profile as well as spring rates can be crucial. The more rubber between the rims and the road, the less jarring the ride will be. On SUVs, 17-inch wheels give the softest ride, 18-inch often the best compromise and 19-inch or 20-inch can turn comfort into discomfort. The exception is the Jeep Grand Cherokee, that is far better on 20-inch wheels with air suspension than it is on 18-inch wheels with steel springs.

Jeep interiors have often had a reputation for being dated with lots of wood and old-fashioned controls. Fortunately this Grand Cherokee does try and move things on a bit with a more modern appearance albeit not an especially stylish one. It's fairly standard fare with reasonable quality but the feel of many of the switches and dials is not a premium one.
As you'd expect of a car that's almost five metres long, there's plenty of room inside with comfortable seating for five and a boot capable of carrying all their luggage too. There's even a full-size spare wheel under the floor - after all, a can of sealant is unlikely to be much use in the middle of a Yorkshire moor. There's also good storage with large door pockets and the obligatory twin cupholders next to the gear lever. This is still an American design after all.
In mid 2013 the Grand Cherokee was extensively revamped and nowhere is this more evident than inside. Quality has been vastly improved and there are new dials, a far superior media system. Jeep has also installed a new air conditioning system, with improved controls and a new steering wheel, although it still comes with sections of wood on the Overland and Summit models, something we're not fans of.
The old fashioned and clunky gear lever has been replaced by a much sleeker stick, reminiscent of the yacht-style gear lever from the Audi A7 while Overland, Summit and SRT models come with a huge twin-panel panoramic sunroof which extends from the windscreen to the rear of the car. The changes mean the Grand Cherokee finally has an interior more akin to a car at this price.
One dated feature that's still present is the foot operated parking brake. It's clunky to use and also takes up room in the footwell. There's no left foot rest either so you find your left leg resting against the parking brake pedal which is annoying, especially on long journeys. We'd expect an electric parking brake for a car at this level.
Being a Jeep, equipment levels are on the whole decent, although the entry-level and lower powered Laredo trim is a bit sparse with cloth seats with manual adjustment, 18-inch wheels and no powered tailgate. The Limited and Limited+ represent better value for money and while the top Summit version gets all the bells and whistles it does push the price up to almost £50k.
Standard equipment:
Laredo comes with the lower powered 190PS 3.0 CRD engine, a body-coloured grille, daytime running lights, an auto-dimming rearview mirror, 18-inch satin chrome wheels, cloth seats, power driver and passenger four-way lumbar adjustment, leather steering wheel with audio controls, automatic dual-zone climate control, cruise control, hill descent control, front and rear side curtain airbags, tyrpe pressure monitoring, automatic wipers, Quadra-Trac II, Uconnect 8.4-inch touchscreen system, DAB, USB hub and Bluetooth.
Limited adds the more powerful 250PS 3.0 CRD engine, a chrome grille, dual exhausts, auto-dimming exterior mirrors, power tailgate, leather seats, power eight way driver and passenger seats, heated front and second row seats, heated steering wheel, power steering wheel adjustment, driver seat memory, Parksense front and rear pask assist system and a reversing camera.
Limited+ gets 20-inch polished alloy wheels, performance brake discs, sports suspension and sat nav.
Overland has a chrome grille with black honeycomb mesh, dual-panel panoramic sunroof, deep tinted privacy glass, Nappa leather seats, leather trimmed dashboard top, door panels, armrests and console, ventilated seats, wooden insert on steering wheel, Quadra-Drive II with ELSD and air suspension.
Summit adds chrome fog lamp surrounds, adaptive xenon headlights, rectangular exhausts, Natura plus leather seats, faux-suede headlining, adaptive cruise control, Forward Collision Warning with crash mitigation, blind spot monitoring and a Harman Kardon surround sound stereo with 19 speakers and 825W amplifier.
SRT is the performance model with a 6.4-litre V8 engine and has black exhausts tips, a rear spoiler, 20-inch Black Vapour SRT alloys, premium Laguna leather bucket seats, chrome pedal caps, carbon fibre effect interior trim, SRT leather steering wheel, SRT performance brake discs, launch control, Quadra-Trac Active on Demand, Selec-Trac system and active damping sports suspension.

Driving Jeep Grand Cherokee (2011)
- Engines range from 3.0 CRD to 6.4 SRT8
- Readers report Real MPG to be between 23–36 mpg
The Grand Cherokee is a big car and pretty cumbersome on the road. It's not helped by very slow and unresponsive steering which means tackling bends with any gusto does not fill you with much confidence. That's a shame as there's not too much body roll in corners but the front end doesn't feel like it has too much grip either. It's a lot happier cruising on the motorway.
The Limited and Laredo models come with 18-inch wheels which help give a forgiving ride, albeit at the expense of handling. Moving up to the Limited+ gets you 20-inch wheels and a much harder ride that crashes and pitches over potholes and around corners.
The big difference comes with the Overland and Summit versions which have air suspension, which gives a softer ride that cushions any shocks felt through the lower profile tyres. It transforms the car from feeling soft and soggy to a much sharper drive, with better steering and more front end grip too. When the Grand Cherokee was revised in 2013 it brought some significant changes with a more rigid body structure and uprated suspension.
The result is that the revamped Grand Cherokee is a huge improvement on the road. The handling is vastly improved and it gives you more confidence in corners with better bite from the front tyres. The steering has been transformed, with a touch more feel (although it's still very light) and better response. As a result you won't find yourself having to turn the steering wheel as much on small roundabouts or in tight junctions.
The other big change in the facelift is the adoption of a new eight-speed automatic gearbox, replacing the dated five-speed auto that was previously fitted. The eight-speed is a ZF transmission and similar to those found in Audi and Jaguar cars. In the Grand Cherokee it works very well and is far smoother than the old gearbox with quicker shifts and better kickdown.
The 3.0 CRD diesel engine continues and offers good low down pulling power. It's not the most refined of engines but it's less noisy helped by good sound insulation in the cabin. The entry-level Laredo model gets a lower powered 190PS version of this engine but the majority of Grand Cherokee models will come with the full 250PS.
What really marks this engine out is its 570Nm of torque which is available from just 2000rpm. There's a predictable power delivery, helped by that new gearbox, so it pulls well but smoothly from low down, feeling strong through the rev range. Economy has improved over pre-facelift models and is up to 37.7mpg with emissions of 198g/km - that's for both the lower powered and the 250PS version.
As a tow car, the Grand Cherokee has always proved popular and this model is ideal with all that torque. The maximum towing capability is up to 3500kg for all models apart from the Summit which can pull up to 2949kg. As you'd expect from Jeep, the Grand Cherokee is a proper off-road 4x4 too. It's amazingly capable on proper tough terrain and will continue to surprise you with what it can tackle.
If you're going to regularly covering serious terrain you'll want the Overland or Summit models. These get the Quadra-Drive II four-wheel drive system which comes with a rear electronic limited-slip differential. On slippery surfaces, the system automatically redirects power between the front and rear axles plus it includes a proper 4WD Low range.

Good
- Much improved from 2013 facelift so much so that it's almost like a new model.
- Plenty of room inside with large boot and spacious rear seats.
- Facelift models come with nice Audi-style gear lever.
Bad
- Drives far better on 265/50 R20s than on 265/60 R18s.
- Really needs the 'Quadra-Lift' air suspension standard on the Overland.
- Has old fashioned foot-operated parking brake.
What to watch out for
16-7-2013: Extensive 2013 facelift seems to have led to a shortage of parts for the 2011 Jeep Grand Cherokee with a two month wait for parts such as a rear window.
16-7-2013: Seem to have been some electrical faults: electric windows not working and battery continually going flat.
25-10-2014: Used 2013 Jeep grand Cherokee, purchased April 2014, has been back to Jeep dealers 7 times with wiring loom issues. (See Recalls below)
17-11-2015: Steering rack gaiter failed on 4 year old 2011 jeep Grand Cherokee Overland at 35,416 miles. Goodwill claim refused bewcause car had been independently serviced. Looking at £1,000 bill to repair. Numerous starter motor and battery drain problems as well.
8-8-2016: On a 2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee 'Summit', prior to the 2 year service the brake pedal was "high" with very little foot movement to initiate slowing. After the 2 year service and brake fluid change the brake had more travel and felt much as though air had been introduced. The dealer agreed and re-bled the system twice since he compared it with another GC in stock. When asked what procedure they use to change brake fluid the dealer said he pressured the master cylinder.
17-3-2017: Problems reported with Uconnect Infotainment system on new Jeep Grand Cherokee: Voice Command unavailable, Traffic management system not displaying traffic incidents, Memory seat function inoperative, reversing camera guidelines not aligned, when calling a number manually the Uconnect is freezing until the car is turned on/off, exterior manual locking does not work, heated seat and steering wheel does not come on automatically when temperature is below 4C, headlight beam seems to be set high on low beam. Replacement radios on back order.
29-5-2018: Report of battery discharge down to 4.5 volts on 2015/65 Jeep Grand Cherokee 3.0V6 at 14,678 miles. Car is used eveery day for a variety of journeys: long, medium and short. Jeep dealer re-charged the battery and told owner: Battery should be regularly charged up from time to time. Gave no explanation for the discharge. Refused to replace the battery FoC, stating they cost £900. Stated they had no knowledge of there being a general fault on the vehicle model that could explain what had happened.
14-12-2019: Report of fuel injection pump of 2012/62 Jeep Grand Cherokee failing and sending shards of metal into the injectors, damaging four beyond repair. Owner facing £10,000 bill for new pump and four new injectors.
8-7-2020: Report of alternator failure on 2013 Jeep Grand Cherokee V6 diesel. The car had a similar failure two years and 1 month ago and the Jeep dealer is refusing to contribute towards the cost.
Recalls
7-3-2014: R/2013/151: Jeep Grand Cherokee: The vehicle may experience an instrument cluster blackout, a loss of warning light illumination and/or a loss of ABS/electronic stability control system function. The loss of instrument cluster illumination and/or ABS function during certain driving conditions may cause a crash without warning. Fix: Recall the vehicles that are likely to be affected to reprogram the instrument cluster and ABS module. Check and tighten the alternator ground. Build dates: 8-1-2013 to 2--8-2013. VINs: 1C4RJFBM4EC100549 to 1C4RJFBG4EC274664
6-6-2014: Just-Auto.com picked up from Reuters that Chrysler Group is recalling qbout 10,700 SUVs (3,200 outside the USA), including Jeep Grand Cherokees built between 16-1-2014 and 17-4-2014 because it was found that when cruise control is engaged, the vehicle may accelerate for about a second after the accelerator pedal is released. "In high-performance vehicles subject to the recall, the event may last up to two seconds before deceleration begins," the company said. Chrysler in April recalled nearly 870,000 vehicles to fix a defect in the brake systems. More: http://www.reuters.com/finance/stocks/overview?
2-9-2014: R/2014/079: Jeep Grand Cherokee: The brake booster may prematurely corrode. If perforation of the brake booster shell (due to corrosion) occurs, water could enter the brake booster during wet weather. In very cold weather the water may freeze. The driver may be required to apply additional application force to the brakes during sub-freezing driving conditions leading to an additional brake pedal application force requirement which could slow the driver's brake application reaction time and cause a crash. Fix: Recall the vehicles that are likely to be affected to check the brake booster for corrosion and where necessary replace the brake booster. In all cases a shield to protect the brake booster crimp joints from water exposure will be fitted. Build dtates: 1-8-2010 to 8-8-2014. VINs: IC4RDHAG0CC108854 to 1J4RS6GTXBC739604
22-9-2014: News from Just-Auto.com: Chrysler Group is voluntarily recalling an estimated 230,760 2011 Jeep Grand Cherokees and Dodge Durangos to install a new relay circuit to improve fuel pump system durability. A warranty claims analysis discovered a pattern of repairs involving fuel pump relays, some of which were susceptible to deformation which may affect fuel pump function. This could prevent the car from starting or cause an engine stall. Chrysler said it was unaware of any accidents or injuries related to this condition. The fuel pump relay is located inside a power module which also helps manage other vehicle functions. None of these other functions, including airbag deployment, is affected by the fuel pump relay. The recall covers an estimated 188,723 vehicles in the US; 15,898 in Canada; 7,126 in Mexico and 19,013 outside the NAFTA region. Chrysler will contact owners to arrange a free repair.
5-11-2014: R/2014/132: Jeep Grand Cherokee: The bulb failure detection system may not alert the driver to the failure of a rear indicator bulb. Fix: Reprogram the Body control Module with new software. Build dates: 2-2-2013 to 20-4-2014. VINs: 1C4RJEAG0EC245769 to 1C4RJFKTXEC402001.
5-11-2014: R/2014/133: Jeep Grand Cherokee: Under certain braking events, the Ready Alert Braking System (RAB) may result in the driver experiencing a hard brake pedal feel. If the driver experiences a hard brake pedal, they may not push the pedal as intended, which can result in a lengthening of the stopping distance of the vehicle, so increasing the risk of a crash. Fix: Recall all affected vehicles to update the RAB software in the ABS ECU. Build dates: 11-10-2011 to 1-10-2012. VINs: 1C4RDHAG0CC205651 to 1C4SDJET7CC275793
5-11-2014: R/2014/139: Jeep Grand Cherokee: On affected vehicles, it is possible that the wiring to the vanity light within the sun visor may sustain damage during maintenance procedures on the visor or the vehicle's headlining. Damaged wiring could be a risk of fire plus the vanity light my not operate. Fix: Fit new wiring guides to all affected vehicles and repair wiring where damage is present. Build dates: 5-1-2010 to 11-12-2013. VINs: 1C4RDHDG0CC121714 to 1J4RS6GT6BC518209
9-1-2015: R/2014/168: Jeep Grand Cherokee: The Steering Column Control Module (SSCM) may be affected by electrical interference. This may disable the Electronic Stability Control (ESC) system. Though the ESC warning lamp will illuminate the ESC may not be operable on demand. Fix: Reprogram the SCCM. Build dates: 3-10-2013 to 11-4-2014. VINs: 1C4RJEAG0EC243309 to 1C4RJFKTXEC402001 and
1C4RDHAG0EC300729 to 1C4SDJFTXEC482986
21-6-2016: Following a high profile fatality, FIAT Chrysler issued instructions to owners regarding the correct use of the confusing Drive/Park control on automatic Jeep Grand Cherokees and Chrysler 300cs. It subsequently issued dealers with a software upgrade for petrol engined 3.6 litre and 5.7 litre models, to be followed by an upgrade for diesels and 6.4 litre SRT8s in August 2016. It states, " The electronic shift lever on about 536,000 of the above vehicles may allow a roll away condition if the vehicle's engine is left running, the parking brake is not engaged, and the transmission is not in the "PARK"position before exiting the vehicle. New software must be installed which includes an "Auto Park" feature that eliminates the possibility of the driver inadvertently failing to place the transmission into "PARK" prior to exiting the vehicle. An a ddendum card f or th e owner's manual must be placed in each vehicle." It is understood that, as a fail-safe, "Auto Park" locks the transmission in Park when the driver's door is opened. In the USA, recall work must be carried out to all dealer stocks of both new and used vehicles affected by the recall.
15/12/2017: R/2-17/320: BRAKE BOOSTER WATER SHIELD MAY BE INCORRECTLY INSTALLED. There is a risk that the brake booster water shield may be incorrectly installed. This may result in limited braking ability due to water ingress into the brake booster. Fix: On affected vehicles the brake booster water shield must be inspected for proper installation. If the brake booster water shield is found to be missing or incorrectly installed, the brake booster must also be vacuum tested. Brake boosters that do not pass the vacuum test must be replaced. Jeep Grand Cherokee extensively facelifted
With a new look outside and in, new cutting-edge technology and improved performance on-road and off, the Grand Cherokee remains the ultimate Jeep in terms of power, comfort, craftsmanship and sophistication. The British market will be able to choose from two engines, three power outputs, and six trim levels. But whichever model buyers pick, Jeep's trademark capability will come as standard along with a raft of equipment that positions the Grand Cherokee firmly at the heart of the premium SUV market.
Whether it's the potent 3.0-litre turbo diesel or the blisteringly quick 6.4-litre SRT model, every 2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee will come with a new eight-speed automatic transmission. This significantly reduces consumption and emissions while improving acceleration and delivering smoother, faster gear changes.
All models have a smart new look characterised by bi-xenon headlamps with LED daytime running lights (DRLs), new wheels and new colour combinations. Inside, the atmosphere has been given an even more sophisticated ambiance with new hand-crafted materials such as Natura Plus leather and open pore Zebrano wood trim.
As befits a premium model, the new Jeep Grand Cherokee is packed with technology. Slipping behind the new three-spoke leather-wrapped steering wheel, drivers will notice the buttons that activate the cruise control and infotainment system. Ahead there's a new TFT (Thin Film Transistor) 7-inch configurable driver display in the instrument cluster. On the dashboard sits a new Uconnect display with an 8.4-inch touchscreen. Limited Plus, Overland, Summit and SRT models have the new Smartouch satellite navigation as standard; it can be specified in all other models.
The top-of-the-range Summit and high-performance SRT come with a state-of-the-art 19-speaker, 825-watt Harman Kardon surround-sound audio system.
A stand-out feature of all models is the comprehensive array of safety equipment. This includes new Adaptive Cruise Control with Stop (available late 2013), Forward Collision Warning with Crash Mitigation and new Selec-Speed Control which supplement the rich array of more than 60 standard-fit active and passive safety systems.
Legendary Jeep capability comes courtesy of three four-wheel drive systems. These include the accomplished Quadra-Trac II, the on-road focused and SRT-exclusive Quadra-Trac and the sophisticated Quadra-Drive II with its rear Electronic Limited-Slip Differential. These are complemented by the Jeep Quadra-Lift air suspension and the Selec-Terrain and Selec-Trac traction management systems which ensure the Grand Cherokee's power is put to good use in all conditions.
The 2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee is available in Laredo, Limited, Limited Plus, Overland and the exclusive top of the range Summit trim. All these models feature the 3.0-litre CRD engine which employs Fiat Group Automobiles' ground breaking MultiJet 2 technology for a class-leading compromise between effortless power and fuel-saving efficiency. The Laredo model features a lower-powered version of the CRD engine while the high-performance SRT gets the punchy 6.4-litre V8 HEMI engine delivering 461 bhp.
There are nine colour options for exterior paintwork along with five wheel designs. A raft of distinctive new colours inside ensures there really will never be a dull moment in the life of the new Grand Cherokee owner.

The latest, model year Grand Cherokee now has a new start stop function and electric steering which helps to achieve a 14g/km reduction in CO2 (to 184g/km). Fuel economy has also been improved to 40.4 mpg on diesel versions.
Designed to enhance Grand Cherokee's striking design, the new model's bold styling includes a range of new exterior colours: Velvet Red, Redline and Ivory Tri-Coat, while acoustic glass improves the cabin experience.
Inside, after much criticism of its operation and at least one death, a new, more substantial premium gear lever replaces the aircraft-style e-shift and there is a revised centre stack. New electric power steering with selectable drive modes (Sport, Comfort or Normal) is introduced and safety features such as a 'Stop' function up to 7mph on the Rear Park Assist, and full speed forward collision warning are included for the first time.
The Jeep Grand Cherokee MY16 starts at £45,050 OTR for the 3.0 CRD Limited+, rising to £52,550 OTR for the 3.0 CRD Summit.
