What is the Fastest Speed Recorded by a VW Beetle?

Earlier this week, a specially tuned Volkswagen Beetle LSR took to the salt flats and achieved the fastest speed ever recorded by a Beetle. Piloted by Automobile magazine contributing Editor Preston Lerner, the Beetle was able to hit 205.122 mph. With such an impressive speed, you would probably think that there was a larger V8, or even a V6 shoehorned into the nose of the Beetle, but that wasn't the case at all. The speed was recorded with the standard 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine in place.

Modifications of the 205-MPH VW Beetle LSR

It is worth noting that achieving the fastest speed ever recorded by a Beetle did come with some slight tweaks to the engine. The engine was handed to THR Manufacturing in Santa Paula, California where it was given new turbochargers, pistons, camshafts, connecting rods and head modifications. When all was said and done, the engine returned a shocking output of 543 horsepower and 421 lb-ft of torque.

In addition to the engine tweaks, the suspension of the Beetle was lowered and special Salt Flat wheels and tires were fitted to it, to give it the most-possible traction. To further enhance its grip, a limited-slip differential was added. A great deal of weight was also cut from the Beetle. The interior was stripped and outfitted with full safety equipment such as a roll cage, racing seat, harness and fire suppression.

Most cars that hit speeds that exceed 200 mph are actually engineered to cut through the wind and to make it possible for the car to achieve such mind-blowing speeds. The Volkswagen Beetle LSR, however, did it with its round roof and curvy body, which, while quite iconic, is not exactly the most aerodynamic.

What is the Fastest Volkswagen Beetle for Sale Today?

Because the Beetle isn't the most aerodynamic, the fact that it was able to hit 205 mph says a lot about the strength of TSI engine that comes standard with each and every Beetle model. Without all of the tweaks in place, the most performance that can be squeezed from the commercially-accessible engine is 210 horsepower and 207 lb-ft of torque—an output that is accessible with the Volkswagen Beetle R-Line coupe. For safety, the engine of the R-Line has a speed limiter on it that cuts things off at 130 mph.

While the record-breaking, specially-tuned Beetle LSR will not ever be available for sale, we can help you to get in a model of the Beetle R-Line, which, as we said, is the fastest Beetle currently available.
